Since 1987, the fellowship positions at Genesys Regional Medical Center (GRMC) have prepared individuals for leadership roles in primary care medical education as well as providing excellent clinical experiences in behavioral medicine for traditional general hospital practice and outpatient health psychology. The focus is on primary care health psychology and will include clinical experiences in such areas as lifestyle change, chronic pain management, adjustment to chronic medical conditions (i.e. diabetes, hypertension, asthma), and helping those individuals that are high utilizers of primary care services.
The experience at GRMC consists of three distinct and interrelated rotations:
Family Medicine Residency Program: Fellows gain experiences in the Family Medicine outpatient health center (East Flint Campus) providing clinical services and teaching in a collaborative and integrated manner. An Integrated Primary Care (IPC) model of providing care has been developed. FM residents receive didactic teaching and precepting supervision by fellows and faculty. Primary supervision is provided by Scott Nyman, PhD. Click here for a Typical Week in the Life of a Fellow - FM
Internal Medicine and OG/GYN Residency Program: Fellows continue their collaborative work with primary care residents in the IM and OB/GYN programs at West Flint Campus. Under the supervision of Heather Kirkpatrick, PhD, ABPP fellows provide clinical services in this primary care setting. They are also directly involved in teaching of residents in their clinical encounters and work within an IPC model of care. Click here for a Typical Week in the Life of a Fellow - IM
Genesys Regional Medical Center – Health Park: Fellows gain consultative-liaison experiences in the 410-bed community based teaching medical center. Fellows also gain valuable experiences in presurgical evaluation assessments and collaborative interactions with specialty medicine units. Primary clinical supervision is provided by Mark Vogel, PhD, ABPP. Click here for a Typical Week in the Life of a Fellow - Hospital Consult (CL) Service
The hospital, built in 1997 provides a healing atmosphere of nature trails, hardwood trees, and small ponds at Health Park campus in Grand Blanc. The 21st century medical center is one of the first of its kind built both clinically and architecturally around a patient-focused care philosophy.
Our fellows have had great success in achieving their employment goals in clinical health psychology.
